Getting More Use Out of Pendants

Sterling Silver Chains. Something About Silver.
You found the perfect pendant. It incorporates your favorite colors, is neither too large nor too small, and really lets your personal sense of style shine. Best of all, you just know you are going to wear it all the time, but then you don’t.

You may put it on often, intending to wear it with many different outfits, but then it’s back to the jewelry box for your favorite pendant before you even leave the room. It just doesn’t look right.

Rather than the actual pendant not working with your outfits, it may be necklace it is on. Different shirts have different necklines, and different necklines call for different necklace lengths. For example, a scoop neck may look best with a 16” or 18” chain while a turtleneck may require a 20” chain or longer.

To get more mileage out of your favorite pendant, consider picking up sterling silver chains in varying lengths. Now that your pendant can be worn with multiple outfits in your wardrobe, your pendant may just spend more time on your neck than in your jewelry box!

Happy Earth Day from SAS

So, today is the 41st Earth Day. Ever since 1970 more and more people around the world have been taking time out for Mother Earth on April 22. It is a day marked by many pledges big and small to lessen our negative impact on the environment and promote green living. This is definitely a step in the right direction. But rather than making lofty promises that are way too difficult for the average busy family to keep for longer than a weekend, how about making a few small changes?

Small changes are much easier to implement and stick to, which adds up to lots of “green points” over time. So what can a busy person/family do to help the environment? Well, today is the perfect day to figure it out! Please find a few suggestions below. Ultimately it is about picking the changes that are easy for you to stick to over the long haul. EarthDay.org has many great ideas as well. Happy Earth Day!!

Easy-to-Implement Green Changes:

1.) Change out your standard incandescent light bulbs for LED or CFL bulbs. It will reduce your footprint on the environment while saving you money on your electricity bill.

2.) Commit to recycling. Try to repurpose what your local recycling center can’t take.

3.) Opt for organic and/or local food whenever possible. The less pesticides used on food and the shorter distance it has to travel, the better for the environment and you.

4.) Switch to green household cleaning products. You will be helping the earth while decreasing your family’s exposure to harmful chemicals.

5.)Buy items that are greener than the average. For example, shirts made from organic cotton or a table constructed from repurposed wood. You could also go green with your jewelry by purchasing from Something About Silver’s Organic Fine Silver Jewelry Line, which is made from recycled fine silver.

The Rising Price of Silver

Silver Bars. Image courtesy of silver-coin-values.com.
Have you heard about the ever-rising price of silver? Gold gets a lot of attention, which per ounce is more expensive than silver and is also rising rapidly. However, the percentage increase in the price of silver is much higher than gold. In fact, the price of silver increased over 80% last year while gold’s price increased about 27%. Last year at this time silver was about $18.26 per ounce, and today it’s at $45.95 per ounce.

What does all this mean? Silver jewelry prices are on the rise. Chances are the silver jewelry you already have is worth more today than when you bought it. However, you will also being paying more for the silver jewelry you buy from now on. No matter the size of the jewelry merchant, everyone pays more for silver these days. Being that it is a commodity, there really isn’t room for negotiation.

There is no projection for silver prices to decrease. In fact, all indications point towards prices continuing to rise. That means it’s best to purchase the silver jewelry you are interested in now before the prices go up again.

Here at Something About Silver, we are working hard to keep our prices from increasing too much, but as with every jeweler, we need to keep the lights on! When you do see price increases, know that it reflects the rising price of silver. Hey, you may be paying a little more, but it’s also worth more. Happy shopping!
